Book Review - That Printer of Udell's

That Printer of Udell'sThat Printer of Udell's by Harold Bell Wright

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

My Synopsis

That Printer of Udell's follows the path of young Dick Falkner, whose mother is dead and whose father is a drunk. From a very young age, he makes his own way in the world, until he finds himself looking for work among the "kind" Christian people of Boyd City.

Unfortunately, their hypocrisy is all too clear to him; they go to church and nod their heads as the pastor preaches goodwill to all men, but their lives reflect that of self-centered socialites. Disgusted, he applies for work from a man who, like himself, sees the falsity of the church people.

In time, the citizens of Boyd City, with young Dick as their catalyst, slowly begin changing that first impression that he had formed of them. More and more, the young people start reaching out with ideas to change things for the better in their city, and before too long many of the older folks are engaged in helping their fellow man as well.

Before you know it, Dick Falkner is a fairly influential man in the church community, but he is not without troubles of his own, which make his character all the deeper and more admirable.

My Thoughts

I began reading this book in fits and starts, but before I knew it I was drawn into a book that grabbed me in a way that many of today's contemporary works will not do. Many of those works employ sensation as their means of drawing you on and you want to read until the next shock, but in this book, I believe I was drawn on because I really began to know, love, and care about the well-written characters.  Their trials and triumphs seemed to be conveyed in a way that appealed to me.

Harold Bell Wright, a American pastor during the first half of the 20th century, experienced much of what his main character does. This book was his first attempt in the writing field, and I have to say that he did a good job. I loved the fairly simple style in which the story was told.

"As he stood there, the audience was forgotten. The past, with all its mistakes and suffering, its doubt and sin,
came before him for an instant, then vanished, and his heart leaped for joy, because he knew that it was gone
forever. And the future, made beautiful by the presence of Christ and the conviction that he was right with
God, stretched away as a path leading ever upward, until it was lost in the glories of the life to come, while he
heard, as in a dream, the words of his confessed Master, “Follow: thou me."

It's a story of faith, but more than that, it's a story that cries out against the apathy that even churches of today are often dwelling in. This book was not written for those who are lost and need to be saved, but for those who are saved and need to help the lost.

All in all, I loved this book, and have added it to my favorites shelf. If anyone were to ask me, I would recommend it in a heartbeat. It's one of those books for me, that although the people may appear to be slightly more perfect than what each of us think is possible, it gives me something to strive for. That is the kind of book that edifies me the most.

Before I go, I would like to point you to the Wikipedia page on That Printer of Udell's. I especially want to point out the last paragraph about Ronald Reagan. It just provides an interesting tidbit of information.

Finally, I would like to ask for your help. I'm not that great at writing book reviews and could use all the help I can get! What can I add to make a book review more helpful or informative? Thanks Shabby Apple, Now You've Got Me Started...

As some of my friends may know, I stayed up a little later than I intended to last night collecting inspiration, searching for the ever attainable and elusive "free", and generally looking for great ideas.  I thought I would share a few with you.

I'm not really that much of a fashion person.  I like to wear nice clothes, and mix and match my wardrobe to come up with a new combination.  I'm not a fashion blogger and probably won't ever be, but lately I have been inspired to try and sew some of my own clothes (Shabby Apple helped with that).  What is really great about this, is that the huge piece of fabric that I have and plan on making a dress with, came from the thrift store!  Some people say that it's not entirely practical to make your own clothes anymore. I disagree. You just have to do it in the right way.

Anyhow, to get back on track here.  Last night I signed up for a couple of websites that I figured would be fun to share, and maybe I'll see one of you signed up for them as well!

  • Burda Style ~ Sewing patterns, some free, some not.  I definitely think it's worth the sign up.  As a featured pattern that they offer for free, here's a link to some cute culottes. I might have to try this, Laura! ;)
  • Your Style Rocks ~ It looks like this site is just getting started, but if you're into fashion and design, you might want to take a look!  They host contests where you can enter a design.  If your design wins, then they make it and offer it as a free pattern on their site!
  • Free Sewing Patterns ~ Looks like a great collection of tutorial links!

Alright, three links may not seem like a lot (although there's more than three links up there! Go back and look.), but I definitely think that between those websites you'll have enough to keep your creative juices flowing and your sewing machine humming for a while.  Unfortunately, I don't have such a huge stash and will run out of fabric before I run out of ideas.

What are you sewing?  Do you prefer "refashion", "diy fashion", or just plain and simple "free patterns"?  What fashion or pattern websites do you frequent?

The Beginning of Fairies

Cyclamen

When the first baby laughed for the first time, its laugh broke into a thousand pieces, and they all went skipping about, and that was the beginning of fairies.  And now when every new baby is born its first laugh becomes a fairy.  So there ought to be one fairy for every boy or girl.  ~James Matthew Barrie, Peter Pan
I've been thinking a lot lately.  Growing up, I think.  Someday I will read this and think, "I was so naive," but for the moment, its monumental.

I have thought about things that I have never had to think about before.

In the Word and at the Feet of God

What a good thing it is when circumstances or necessity drives a man to where he should have been in the first place: in the Word and at the feet of God.

A Glimpse at Apartment 33 -Part 1

Once upon a time, not too long ago, I started a story about a group of people who lived together in a rather small, rather old apartment building.  It was to be a simple tale, about these people, and how their friendships help to change and mold each of them.

Just for fun, and inspired by the Beautiful People blog meme that Sam and Georgie are doing, I thought I would introduce you to a few of the characters, and perhaps it will inspire me to start writing their tale again!

Karolyn Ambleton

Age: 24

Sweet tempered and kind, Karolyn is the loving wife and mother of her household.  New to Apartment 33, she does her best to make friends with the other residents and surprises them by hosting a party for that very reason.  She likes to make special treats for the children, and pretty presents for the adults.  One of her faults, however, is that of jumping to conclusions, and when she gets angry she gets angry!  It takes quite a bit though, to rile that gal up.
Karolyn Ambleton

Mackenzie Ambleton

Age: 25

Being Karolyn's husband, Mac lives daily with bright, cheerful things, which on the whole, he doesn't mind.  A little more serious than most, but with a charming smile, he tries his best to keep things fairly sensible and understandable.  If they aren't, then he feels like everything is out of control.  Working as a journalist at the local paper, he puts in long days and sometimes works late, causing him to often be tired. Mac likes playing with his daughter, 1-year-old Grace, building model ships, eating chocolate.

Bear-Paw Quilt Block

Last month I was very excited about doing following a tutorial for a quilt block, and I have done it again this month!  Over at Penelope Waits, the blog author and her friend have been challenging themselves every month to pick a picture, pick a quilt block, and then use the colors from the picture to create their very own quilt block.  I have been doing it too.

Bear-Paw Quilt Block

I picked my picture (a baby room in blue and green pastels), and set to work, carefully cutting out my pieces. I set to work, following the instructions, and finished with a block!

Bear-Paw Quilt Block w/inspiration

I would really encourage all of you crafty and not-so-crafty girls out there to try these tutorials over at Penelope Waits.  They are really easy to follow.  I have hardly ever sewn a quilt block in my life, and now I have two completed!  Not to mention they are very satisfying to finish.

Bear-Paw

Granted, my two sweet, little blocks aren't perfectly straight, or beautifully photographed (I used my cellphone!), but they were fun to make.

What crafts have you been working on lately?  If you decide to try out the tutorials from Penelope Waits, let me know, because...well, I'd just love to know! ;)

Creative Writing Prompts #108.

    Tavin Chase Eshley

So, some of my best friends are doing a project called Beautiful People, for writers.  The idea is that you will answer some questions about your characters (character sketch!), so that you or your readers can get to know them a little better.

I'm going to be doing my sketch this month on a character that I haven't really written yet.  I have this idea in my head, but I don't know how to get it down on "paper" yet, so it has remained unwritten for months.  Here he is.

    What is their full name?

    Tavin Chase Eshley

Does his or her name have a special meaning?

I'm not sure if I remember.  I think it's a possibility that I just liked the names.

Does your character have a methodical or disorganized personality?
I think he has a fairly methodical personality. He does extremely well in "school" (he's actually in a college/academy kind of thing.  Still unsure on that point.)

Does he or she think inside themselves more than they talk out loud to their friends? (more importantly, does he or she actually have friends?)

Tavin is sort of in between.  He doesn't really waste words, but he has friends, and loves to talk with them.

Is there something he or she is afraid of?
He is afraid of hurting or injuring others, as well as being afraid loosing everything that is dear to him.

Does he or she write, dream, dance, sing, or photograph?
Not exactly.  As Ashley said these activities tend more towards the feminine side.  Tavin might be a photographer, but I think he tends more towards studying, instead of having very many personal hobbies.

What is his or her favorite book? (or genre of books)

    He likes the classics.

Who is his or her favorite author and/or someone that inspires him or her?

The person who inspires Tavin the most is his fellow student and "co-worker", Ella. She always inspires him to try and be better.  (At least, I think so!)

    Favorite flavor of ice cream?

    Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.

    Favorite season of the year?
Perhaps Tavin's favorite season is Autumn, although I'm not sure why yet.  I'll have to think on that one for a little bit.

If you would like to participate, then click on the blog button above and read all about it!  I look forward to reading your posts, and hearing what you think of my character.

    Needlecraft from the 20's

My aunt gave me a box a few months ago and when I opened it I was delighted to find an entire stack of Needlecraft Magazines from the 20's!  I was completely and utterly happy as I started to delve through the stack.  I made the mistake of setting them aside though, and now my Aunt wants them back, and I have to hurry to look through them all!

    Old Needlecraft Magazines

There are pretty patterns for all kinds of needlecrafting, and ads for the most hilarious products, cures, and ideas!  I have really enjoyed looking through them as I copy down the patterns, and even some recipes, that I would like to keep.

On the inside flap of each magazine is a full page ad or illustration for Cream of Wheat.  Honestly, if these were mine, I would consider copying them and hanging them on the wall.

    Early Cream of Wheat Ad
Children of the world love Cream of Wheat!

Another ad that keeps popping up is one so similar to the ones that we often see today, that I couldn't help but laugh. There's nothing new under the sun, right?

    Ad from the 20's

Once again, have you found any treasures lately? If so, what were they and what make you so excited about them?

    Feelin' Crafty

I've been feeling fantastically crafty lately, and so I thought I would show you one of crafts that I completed.

    "Regency" Paper Dolls
"I am excessively diverted." ~ Pride & Prejudice

I got the idea for these Fashion Paper dolls, via The Crafty Crow.  By the way, The Crafty Crow is a great place to go to find all kinds of kid-friendly crafts, games and ideas.  Be sure to check it out! (No, nobody asked me to advertise, it was just a fun website I want to share.)

It was such a fun craft idea, and I can totally imagine a gallery of these little ladies decorating the walls of my bedroom. Anyway, I love it and I wanted to share the sweet idea with you. ;)

    My New Coat!

We went shopping today.  We enjoy the walking part of it, plus I had a few dollars left on one of my gift cards from Christmas.  J.C. Penny's seemed like a nice place to shop, so we all hopped out of the van and eagerly walked through the doors.

What was one of the first things that attacked our eyes?  A rack of fabulous coats that were only $19.95! Now, in case you don't think that's an awesome deal, let me show you what kind of coats I'm talking about.

    My Worthington

    This kind.

    Me & My Coat
I know it's a horrible picture, but when you're using a cellphone, what can one say?

    And this one.

So yes, I bought one.  Do you want to know why?  I have several reasons.
    • Originally, this coat cost $250.  No, I'm not even kidding.
    • The price had been knocked down to $20.
    • Remember that gift card I mentioned?  That knocked $13 of the price.
So, grand total for a $250, blue, wool coat?  $7.

I think I'm going to faint.

    My Coat 2

I have wanted a wool coat for ages now.  They have been popular for a few years, but each year I haven't been able to afford it, and practically speaking, this isn't the sort of coat you want to go sledding in.  I always opted for something more...well, like I said, practical.

    My Coat

But when I'm only put out by $7, how can one refuse?  I didn't.  Thanks Grandpa and Grandma!

    The Graphic Girls!

I am going to tell you a history. Once upon a time, in Blogland, there were four kingdoms (Called "blogs". Blogland is very different from our world.), ruled by four lovely Queens.  Each Queen had the desire to bring beauty, encouragement, smiles, and edification to their "blogs". To fulfill this desire, the Queens created many badges, and offered them freely throughout their lands.

One day, Queen Laura, the ruler of the "blog" Walking in Thy Truth, came up with the brilliant idea to unite the four Queens, thereby quadrupling their power for their mission. At first it was a secret, the Queens not wanting to reveal their plan until they had something to prove it's intent and sincerity.  But soon word got out, that the four Queen's were forming an alliance, for what it was unknown, but already advertising was at work, and the Queens took advantage of the hype to increase excitement about their project.

Finally, one day, in great and glorious celebration, they revealed the project! The Graphic Girls was born, each Queen promising to contribute freely and graciously to the common good of all Blogland.

If you would like to adorn your "blog", click on the "advertising" below, and join in the glorious cause to bring beauty, joy, and inspiration to all Blogland!

    Thoughts of Spring! Or Not...

My Georgie and Laura both participated in the Thoughts of Spring Blog Party, and it looked like fun!  So here are my answers to the questions, but without any pictures like the others did.  Also, I'm not really sure how these questions relate to a Thoughts of Spring blog party, but they are pretty good questions nonetheless! I hope you enjoy!

    Photobucket

How would people describe your personality? (If they could only use ONE word.) Are they right?

Wow, this one is a little bit hard, methinks.  If people could only use one word to describe me, I think it would be "vibrant".  Although it depends on if they are thinking positively or not.  I could also be described as "bossy".

What celebrity/celebrities would create a “Star-Struck” feeling if you saw them in real life?

Bing Crosby.  Definitely.  Him, and maybe...Sean Connery. Although I wouldn't really want to meet Sean Connery in real life. So there.

Who is your favorite blogger? Why?

My favorite blogger? Yikes, that's another tough one.  Alright, I'll answer it if we all understand that this is only two of my favorite bloggers. ;)  The first one is Emily Rose from Simply Vintagegirl.  Her photographs, crafts, and general appreciation for beautiful things inspire me.

The second one is Beth from In Word.  She doesn't post very often, but when she does it's funny, poignant, or so downright awesome that it's a wonder we don't all die of coolness overload.  Yep, I think that's about it.

    What is your comfort food/drink?

Eheh...does water count?  I'm not too crazy about hot drinks, and although juice and pop is good, nothing beats a glass of cold water.

Be brave – tell us something very random and weird about yourself.

Although I understand that I have not really thought this through, I have thought it would be kind of cool to be a trucker.  Well, you did ask, after all.

Do you have a strong desire to do something you’ve never done? What is it?

I would like to play Anne of Green Gables in a play someday.  Not because I'm a good actress, or want to be an actress, but just because I think it would be fun.  Maybe the red hair? ;)

Movies: Action, Drama, Romantic Comedy, Documentary, Comedy? What are your favorite genres?

I like: Action, Drama, Romantic Comedy, Documentary, and Comedy. A smattering of everything is pretty nice, although I don't like everything in each category.

Books: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Romance, Biographies, True Stories, Self-Help, Devotional/Study? What are your favorite types of reading material?

My favorite types of reading material consists of anything that inspires me in any way, shape, or form.  If that is any of the categories that are listed above then that's awesome!  This is basically the same answer as the movies.

Music: Funk, Rock, Country, Jazz, Classical, Film Score, Blues, Classic Rock, Crooner, Alternative, Heavy Metal, Techno? What are your favorite types?

Here, I am a little more picky.  I definitely enjoy a few Country songs, and a lot of Classical pieces.  Film scores are inspiring, as well as Soundtracks, Gospel, Hymns, and the occasional OLD popular song.

If you inherited a million dollars, what is the first thing you would do with your money?

The selfish answer is...I would travel to Europe.  In reality, I would put it into my bank account.

Name one weakness of yours (confession is good for the soul).

I think that I am a rather shallow person.  I pretend to be oh so knowledgeable and discerning, but in truth, I don't usually see past the material things.  It's a shortcoming that I know I must work to overcome.

If you could live anywhere at all (and take all your loved ones with you), where would you go?

It would be a toss-up between Europe (But I guess I wouldn't really want to live in Europe), and Chile.  Yes, Chile.

Strange Talent? Can you juggle basketballs, put your legs behind your head or perform some other strange feat?

I can play MarioKart Wii upside down.  Or at least I used to be able to.  My siblings were a little annoyed with me, and it usually made me dizzy, but since I can't whistle I have to be able to do something!

What’s something you consider yourself to be good at? (Don’t worry, it’s not bragging, it’s acknowledging a God given gift).

Crafts.  Although I'm not super good at coming up with brilliant ideas out of thin air, I can execute an already thought of idea with ease and a measure of creativity.

What is one of your favorite things to catch a whiff of?

    Rain, and Italian food.

When you leave a social gathering, do you wish: You would have talked more or You would have talked less?

Sometimes both.  More often than not is is the latter, simply because I don't think before I speak.  The former would be more desirable.

If money wasn’t a factor, what stores would you shop in?

Christopher & Banks, Best Buy, and any yarn store that's close enough to get to.

What is your greatest fear or strange phobia?

I'm afraid of missing out on things that are going on.  I'm also afraid of being alone, I guess.  Although I don't mind being alone, I wouldn't want it permanently.

    What is your greatest accomplishment?

Raising $5,000 to go to Europe?  Graduating from homeschool highschool?  Saying yes to a small child, instead of a lazy no?  There's probably a few.

    What are your favorite animals?

Cats, cats, cats. Definitely cats.  I also like otters and hedgehogs.

    Are you a hopeless romantic?

    Heh, probably.

What movie or book character can you most relate to?

Katherine from Stepping Heavenward.  She was probably written to be just like girls, but I'll risk sounding cliche and say that it seems like she was written just for me.

    Wheels For Noah

Alright, so I was going to write a sweet, touching post about how everyone should go and support this dear family, but I changed my mind.  It turned out way too sappy.

Wait, not the dear family part!  That's not what I meant!  Oh, here, let me try that again.

No, the dear family bit is 100% correct, but since I'm having a hard time writing out a brief summary of the story for you all, how about you just head over to the home page of Wheels for Noah to get the full scoop?

What I REALLY want to tell you is that right now, until Saturday the 5th, they are having an online silent auction in order to raise money to buy a wheelchair accessible bus for the family!  Another thing that I REALLY want to tell you is that there are BUNCH of great products on there to buy, all donated by people who care for Noah and his family and want to help.

But wait, there's more!  I was lucky enough to have some items available that I donated to the auction, and if you go over and check out the auction, you can see them there!  I donated the gloves, the small purse, and...a dress.  If you can find the dress and come back and tell me what kind of dress it is, you get double points!  The points don't count for anything, but hey!  There has to be an incentive somewhere, right?

Anyway, please go check out the auction, and if at all possible think of bidding on some of the items.  It's for a GREAT cause. <3

    Another Thrift Store Treasure

At least, it's a treasure in my humble opinion.  Especially since Louisa May Alcott is one of my favorite authors.  Yes, today at the Goodwill I found two books, actually, one of them being Eight Cousins, in the form of a delightful 1955 edition, complete with adorable, cheerful, and bright illustrations. I'm in love.

    1955 Version of Eight Cousins

The other book I found is a hard-bound copy of Strawberry Girl, by Lois Lenski. Honestly girls, if you haven't read any of Lois Lenski's books, then (if I remember right!), you're missing out!  They are sweet, simple tales with fascinating pictures.  The Lenski books are a little harder to find, so I grabbed it up like a chunk of silver.

Sharing Our Bookshelves @ In the Bookcase

I would also like to direct you over to In The Bookcase for a fun meme called Sharing our Bookshelves!  You have the whole month to share your book related posts, and then we get to do it again next month!

Have you found any thrift store treasures lately?  More particularly, any books?  Tell me about them!
